The following points help to frame our Code of Conduct with examples of acceptable and unacceptable conduct and appropriate consequences. These are examples provided by the Ministry of Education.
Acceptable conduct – For example:
- respecting self, others and the school
- helping to make the school a safe, caring and orderly place
- informing an adult, in a timely manner of incidents of bullying, harassment or intimidation
- engaging in purposeful learning activities in a timely manner
- acting in a manner that brings credit to the individual and the school
Unacceptable conduct – For example:
- behaviours that:
- interfere with the learning of others
- interfere with an orderly environment
- create unsafe conditions
- acts of:
- bullying, harassment or intimidation
- physical violence
- retribution against a person who has reported incidents
- illegal acts, such as:
- possession, use or distribution of illegal or restricted substances
- possession or use of weapons
- theft of or damage to property
Consequences for unacceptable conduct – For example:
- responses to unacceptable conduct are pre-planned, consistent and fair
- disciplinary action, wherever possible, is preventative and restorative.
- students, as often as possible, are encouraged to participate in the develop ment of meaningful consequences for violations of the established code of conduct
- all parents when it is appropriate will be informed of unacceptable conduct.
- consequences could include, but are not limited to, in-school suspension, informal suspension and formal suspension.
The École Marlborough School Code of Conduct has been established to maintain a safe, caring and healthy learning environment. The purpose of the Code of Conduct is to inform all members of the school community of our shared obligations and responsibilities while in attendance at school, while traveling to and from school, and while attending any school function at any location.
As members of the school community it is our responsibility to demonstrate positive conduct and refrain from unacceptable behaviours. All members of the school community have an obligation to:
- Support learning
- Promote safety
- Respect property, environment, personal space and privacy
- Model courtesy, compassion and respect
Conversely, the following behaviours are considered unacceptable:
- Interfering with the learning of others
- Engaging in acts of bullying, harassment, intimidation and/or violence
- Being disrespectful or using threatening language or behaviours (including Internet communication)
- Bringing weapons, including toys and replicas, to school
- Participating in unsafe and/or illegal acts
These lists should not be considered exhaustive and detailed school information may be located in school handbooks, agenda planners, social contracts, websites and the like.
Whenever possible, incidents will be resolved by discussion, mediation and restitution. Every effort to support students and to determine the root causes of behaviour will be made. If the safety or educational program of others is compromised, or if there is an ongoing failure to meet the expectations of the Code of Conduct, this will result in the implementation of a range of consequences. These may include, but are not limited to, the following: suspension, change of program, change of school, referral to a district intervention committee, expulsion and involvement of police and other government agencies when necessary.
Schools will respect the individual differences of students and respond to each situation according to the student’s age, maturity, capacity and past conduct. School officials have a responsibility to inform other parties of serious breaches of the Code of Conduct.
All members of the École Marlborough School community have the right to be treated fairly and consistently, and should know and understand this Code of Conduct.
